Mt. Hood / The Gorge

This area of Oregon is famous thanks to explorers Lewis and Clark, who first paddled through in 1805 on their way to the Pacific Ocean. As they floated downstream, they saw giant cliffs, dozens of waterfalls and thick forests of green trees. They also saw Mt. Hood, which is an ancient volcano and the tallest peak in Oregon. (At 11,245 feet, Mt. Hood would be taller than a 1,000-story building!)

Today, there is a lot to do in this region. You can hike, mountain-bike, golf, cross-country ski, camp, fish, boat, berry-pick, snowboard—and windsurf. And did you know that Timberline Ski Area is open year-round? Yep, you can snowboard in July!
